Swatting attack targets Nikki Haley amid presidential race

Published • By Naeemofficial782
Nikki Haley, who is running for the Republican nomination for president in 2024, faced a dangerous prank last month when someone called 911 and falsely reported a shooting at her home in South Carolina. The incident, known as swatting, is a form of harassment that can have deadly consequences.

According to Reuters  which obtained town records, an unknown person called the emergency line on December 30 and claimed to have shot his girlfriend and threatened to harm himself at Haley's address. The police responded to the call, but soon realized it was a hoax. Haley and her son were not at home at the time; her husband was overseas.

The FBI and Haley's security team were notified of the event and are investigating the source of the call. Haley's campaign has not commented on the incident publicly

Haley, a former governor of South Carolina and ambassador to the United Nations, is the last major challenger to former President Donald Trump, who has dominated the race so far. Haley has refused to drop out of the contest, despite losing the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary to Trump.

Swatting has become a common tactic of intimidation and harassment against public figures and officials in recent years, especially those involved in politics and election security. Earlier this month, special counsel Jack Smith and DC district court judge Tanya Chutkan, who are leading the federal case against Trump for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, were also targeted by swatting. Other victims include Jen Easterly, the head of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency , Shenna Bellows, Maine's secretary of state, and Gabriel Sterling, a top official in the Georgia secretary of state's office.

Swatting can result in serious harm or death to the victims or the responding officers, as well as waste of resources and time for the law enforcement agencies. Experts have linked the rise of swatting to the inflammatory rhetoric and misinformation that have fueled political polarization and violence in the US.
